Accessibility
Everybody should be able to read this.
We aim at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. This page says what has been checked, what passes, and the two places we know it does not yet.
What has been checked
Every colour that carries a word has been measured against the background it sits on. The small caps labels and the quiet grey notes both used to fall below the contrast the guidelines ask for, which is a real person squinting rather than a failed checkbox, and both have been darkened until they pass.
The whole site can be used with a keyboard alone. There is a skip link before anything else, every focused thing draws a visible ring around itself, the menus open on focus and close on Escape, and nothing traps you once you are inside it.
If you have asked your computer to reduce motion, it reduces. Every fade and every drift on this site is switched off by that setting, not softened. Nothing flashes, nothing moves on its own, and nothing is on a timer.
The text is real text, not pictures of text, so it enlarges when you enlarge it and it can be read aloud. Each page has one heading at the top and the rest in order beneath it. The Arabic is marked as Arabic so that a screen reader changes voice for it rather than spelling it out in English.
Where it falls short
The books themselves are not tagged. They are illustrated PDFs, and they carry no reading order that a screen reader can follow. Somebody using one would meet the pages as pictures. This is the honest state of them and we are looking at what it takes to fix, but it is a change to how the books are made and not a change to this website.
Buying needs JavaScript. Every page can be read with scripts switched off, and nothing is hidden from you if they do not run. But the buy button and the free week form both need them. If that is a problem for you, write to us and we will take your order by hand.
What we have not done
This site has not been audited by anybody independent, and it has not been tested by somebody who uses a screen reader every day. Those two things are worth more than everything above, and until they have happened this page is a statement of intent as much as a statement of fact.
If something here does not work for you
Write to salam@habeeya.com and tell us what you were trying to do and what happened. A person reads it. We will reply, and where it is our fault we will fix it rather than explain it. If you need anything on this site in another form, including the books, ask and we will find a way.
